Overview
"Hero of Ashfall." Former blacksmith helper under Silas Crowe, who gifts him the sword Northwind on his 18th birthday. Never declared leader of the Defenders; the others chose him because he noticed things others missed and took responsibility without seeking authority.
Only Bran calls him "Al." In Road, starts as a confident, cocky young adventurer seeking fame and fortune, and learns what being a hero actually means. Came to Dunwick seeking adventure. Confirmed: at Ashfall, only Alden and Carter survive — Bran, Jake, and Elora all die there.
Later loses a rematch with Malachar at Hawthorne, is badly injured, and leaves Northwind behind. Settles in Raven's Rest, in the Pinecrest region, where Carter is also present. Takes a false name there (not yet specified) and eventually meets his wife Sarah and has a son, Benjamin "Ben"/"Benny" Graves.
